CITY OF NORWALK, CT NEW DEAL, NEW DAY: WPA ARTISTS AT WORK AND PLAY
Oxygen Design partnered with the exhibit producer to develop a compelling exhibit at the Norwalk Historical Society Museum in Norwalk, Connecticut, exploring the impact of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) on the local community during the 1930s.
The exhibit examined the dual role of WPA artists: as contributors to public culture and as chroniclers of American life during the Great Depression. The content also addressed the racial dynamics and societal attitudes reflected in the art of the era, inviting thoughtful engagement with both the creative achievements and cultural context of WPA-supported works.
Oxygen Design created a cohesive suite of interpretive exhibit panels and large-format banners, visually unifying historical narratives with powerful imagery. The exhibit successfully connected local history with national themes, helping visitors understand the WPA’s influence on Norwalk’s development, public spaces, and cultural identity.
